High button shoe’s reached their peak of popularity around the turn of the century, the 20th century. During the 20′s “The Jazz Era” they were replaced by oxfords and wingtips. And the September 25, 1933 issue of “Time” magazine published the death of the high-button shoe, as pronounced by President Roosevelt during his first year in office. The high-button shoe was officially out.

But in the new century they’re back more elegant than ever. We commissioned Aubercy Paris the maker of fine French footwear to produce our first high button shoe in Cognac calf and Polo suede, with purple kid linings, and working button holes (button hook included) see tutorial at the bottom of this post.

How to Use a Button Hook

Step 1 – Hold the button hook in your dominant hand while holding the button hole side of the shoe with your other hand.

Step 2 – Insert the “hook” of the button hook through the bottom hole in the shoe/boot, and with your hand pull the row of buttons toward the button hook.

Step 3 – Hook the button hook around the shank of the button and pull the button up through the button hole. Release the button from the hook once the button is above the button hole.

The Shoes in the Window

This week we are featuring the Aubercy oxford with medallion toe and red lining, after all Valentines Day is just around the corner. We’ve combined them with the graphic silk ties created by Robin Joy and an origami flower perfectly folded by Sok Song in connection with the current art installation in our gallery, which will be on display until March 5th.

The Elegance

The Aubercy wholecut is one of the most elegant shoes in our collection. For some reason it seems to draw strong attention from women when they are in the store. This is a very chic shoe and would do very well in a formal setting. In fact one of our clients recently purchased a pair to wear with his tuxedo.

I chose the red lining because of the nostalgic feeling I get when I think of black tuxedos lined in red Ala the Rat Pack, although I’m pretty sure they wore pumps with bows. Regardless, that was the inspiration.

I also like the hand-punched lines that create a very sleek and graceful look. It adds another level of interest that a plain wholecut lacks.

Aubercy Malaury

Whenever I wear the Aubercy Malaury it’s always commented on. Today we set it against this classic plaid English cashmere scarf by Psycho Bunny to bring a bit of holiday color to the store.

When we detailed the Aubercy styles we had the option of choosing the lining colors, and as you can see here we chose red for the black shoes.

The Shoes in the Window

This week we are featuring the Aubercy derby the Faelen in our front window. This shoe is made in rich chocolate brown grain calf with a brown suede inset and suede tassels on the laces. It’s a very handsome country, or urban casual shoe. Worn best with flannels or cords in fall colors.

The Reverso

The name of this model the “Reverso” comes from the reversed stitching on the toecap. This burgundy color oxford by Aubercy has seen an up tick of late. I think it has to do with the color which, is beautiful and then, the fit. The reaction of clients that slip a pair of Aubercy on for the first time is fun to watch. It’s a look of amazement that a shoe right out of the box is so light and comfortable. “They feel like slippers” is a typical refrain.

The Morgan

The weather in New York is perfect; if you looked up “fall weather in NY” in a dictionary this would be it. There’s been a lot of interest in boots lately, which makes sense. I wanted to feature this pair by Aubercy. The Morgan is that perfect combination of leather & suede, in a wonderful dark rust with purple linings. A color that really looks great with any other colors. I would wear these with a pair of wide whale cords in loden green or a pair of gray flannels for example.

What makes these particularly appealing is their continental styling, very sophisticated. All the Aubercy shoes are extremely lightweight and comfortable, and the Morgan is no exception.

What I find most appealing about a wholecut shoe is the simplicity and formality. Made from a single piece of leather there a no other lines to distract the eye. It is also a very comfortable fit because there are no other seams that might cause pressure on a particular spot of the foot.

This pair by Aubercy is not only elegant but also extremely lightweight and flexible on the feet. The wholecut in black is a perfect shoe for a suit, simple, elegant, and dressy.
