NATO Straps

The strap that collectors call “NATO” is based upon the standard watchstrap issued by the British Ministry of Defense (MOD). Called the “G10″ by members of the British military because of the form used to requisition the strap from inventory, the reason it got its “NATO” name is because the strap has a NSN or NATO Stock Number which identifies this type of strap.

Our NATO straps are made in Horween unlined shell cordovan, which means they’re soft, flexible and durable.

The cost of material (shell cordovan) is the main factor. It’s a quality strap made of quality material that will last for many, many years. It costs money, it cost money because it saves money.

This is perfect!, as all my straps have worn away or left me for other wrists.

My first strap I bought in 1963, and it only lasted me several years. From home to my laboratory, voracious acids and various sharp metals resulted in a quickly degrading strap. Needless to say, one day my strap spontaneously unwound and my wrist was bare for the rest of the day. The horrible shame.

The following day I purchased a $20 strap from a store down the street called “No Crap, All Strap” which I believe went out of business sometime during the market crash around ’91. That strap did not survive the gulf war, at one point saving my life deflecting a rather large piece of shrapnel. When I returned home, I found my ex-wife had lost the battle to cancer, leaving me her most treasured possession: the strap collection we had made together during the good years. I could never wear any of those straps as they have far too much sentimental value.

It’s good to see someone is finally making straps that will last more than 5 years. In fact, $225 means that if your strap lasts more than 25 years I’ll have lost only $5 investing in it’s future.

I can’t express how lucky I feel to have found this strap. It’s reminded me how much I’ve lost the past couple years, and with its help, I think I may just be ready to love another strap again.

Love natos. These could be the answer to my prayers. How long are these? What is the tightest setting? What is the loosest?

What is the length of the strap? Thickness of the leather and do you have a brush finish for the hard wear? Oxblood is black?

How does Oxblood compare to Color 8? Lighter? Darker? Browner? Redder?

Ok, I just wanted to be sure I could wear this without a watch. I’ll be ordering the Oxblood but I have to wait until my friend comes over and hits me in the head with a baseball bat.

Love the leather NATO straps. What sort of buckle is used? For a NATO I think it should be a sewn-in (one-piece) buckle, or possibly a screw-in bar, but definitely not a spring-bar.

I am interested in purchasing one of your Nato Horween watch straps for my submariner. Can you please tell me what color is used in this add – because this is the color I would like. I cannot tell if it’s the oxblood or the rust – http://thegentlemanstopcoat.com/2011/11/07/strapped-horween-leather-nato-straps/#more-2337

Also, can you please post some contact information?

    Thankyou.

I have 2 cordovan straps which I wear on my Longines Legendary Diver. The brown one is about 1.5 yrs old and to say the least it looks great and is the most comfortable strap I have ever owned. Purchased a black one and it to is great strap. Wont be sorry owning these they are durable and will last for many many years good investment for a good time piece.

Could you show one of these on a watch on the wrist? Cordovan is often too thick for a NATO style. I’d like to see how yours look on the wrist.
