The Many Flavors of Arca

August 31st, 2009

The “Arca”, by Pierre Corthay is simple, elegant and flatters both the foot and wardrobe. No wonder it’s the most ordered shoe at Leffot.

Our next order in Burgundy will arrive in a few weeks and it promises to be a beauty.

My New Jeans

August 26th, 2009

I went to Uniqlo yesterday for the first time in a very long while. I wasn’t really looking for jeans but I spotted these, which looked much nicer than the rest  of the styles (and they have a lot of styles). I was in the market for a new pair anyway and since my usual source (A.P.C.) was closed for the night I thought I’d give these a try.

I like jeans that are plain, no names, no tags, or fancy stitching. I like dark raw denim and who does that better than most? Japan. These jeans are not just made in Japan they are as the tag says “All Made in Japan”. Without further adieu I found my size and took them home. I wasn’t in the mood to try them on in the store.

I guess it was meant to be because they fit perfectly, I didn’t even have to hem them (a first) since they’re made in different lengths. They’re also sold cuffed this way and as I read recently in Men’s Ex  this is the perfect cuff size (of course).

My only hesitation was the two different color  threads, one a light yellow the other the traditional burnt orange. Then I stopped myself and realized “Hey, they’re “All Made in Japan” they must be right.” Hard to imagine them putting out a product that wasn’t tested, evaluated, critiqued and tweaked a thousand times over. They get my vote.

The Alfreton

August 24th, 2009

Our newest boot is the Alfreton Chelsea by Church’s. A new style for us and for Church’s, the Alfreton is made on the 105 last in black polished binder with diamond rubber soles. The combination of highly polished calf plus a raised and rounder toe box makes this Chelsea boot a more contemporary version of the classic Amberley.

These are also excellent boots to wear in damp weather as well since polished binder repels dampness and the diamond rubber soles will keep the bottom of your feet dry.

The Forest For The Trees

August 20th, 2009

There are all kinds of trees in the forest and so are there all kinds of trees for your shoes. The best trees are those made of a porous wood such as cedar, beech, lime or hornbeam. If you are able to use trees that are the same last and size your shoes are made on all the better.

The single most important thing you can do to prolong the life and comfort of your shoes is to keep properly fitting shoetrees in them.

Sole Survivor – Alden Tour

August 19th, 2009

After having posted the Horween video on the tanning of shell cordovan I had several comments to the effect that it was an excellent video “but”, it would have been even “better” if it had featured Alden.

In the interest of all the “Aldenistas” out there, of which there are many, I present a behind the scenes video of the Alden Shoe Co. by Emily Sweeney of The Boston Globe. This is good stuff…

FYI: Leffot is now stocking the “Indy” boot aka model 405 in Brown Cow Hide on the Tru Balance last.

In addition we are currently taking reserve orders for the Limited Edition “J.C.” Indy Boot in Cigar Shell Cordovan with commando soles. Delivery is anticipated for late ‘09 early ‘10. Please contact us via email is you are interested in reserving a pair. Sizes may be limited.

Visit our Reserve Order page for size availability.

All’s Well That Adwell

August 18th, 2009

When I first saw a sample of this shoe I thought, “Wow this is a really “dumb” shoe.” In the “shoe business” a shoe of this sort is referred to that way. It’s not a negative connotation in fact I meant it as a complement. It’s basic, simple, a bit old fashioned, even orthopedic and yet it has a certain style and coolness to it.

Mama used to say, “Simple is as simple does”. So why mess with it? The Adwell by Church’s is not just a new model it’s a departure from the traditional English shoes we’re used to. “Old” is the new “New”.

500 Miles X 2

August 17th, 2009

Sure it would have been perfect if the song were “1000 Miles” but it wasn’t. Instead Bobby Bare sang “500 Miles Away From Home” in 1963 and it’s still a favorite of mine.

So what’s the point? Well we received the first delivery of the Wolverine 1000 mile boots and I couldn’t help feeling nostalgic. I could imagine the men who wore these boots when they were first produced in the early 1900’s. I also imagine that some, if not many of them worked “away from home”, doing whatever it took to put bread on the table.

Many years have past and yet, today there is a stronger sense of heritage, and “doing what it takes” than any time I can recall. I grew up in Michigan and Wolverine (a Michigan company) was always present. It represented the no nonsense, Midwestern sensibility of it’s customers. Today  over 100 years later they are still manufactured in the U.S.A. as they’ve always been and that’s good enough for me.

So listen to the song twice or 500 miles per boot, these babies were classics from day one. I encourage you to slip a pair on, lace ‘em up and embrace your heritage.
