Walk Don’t Run – Bob Bogle

Bob Bogle who you may ask. He and his friend Don Wilson were co-founders of the Tacoma Washington band The Ventures, forerunners of the “surf sound” in the early sixties. It makes you wonder if there would have been a Dick Dale or The Beach Boys if it weren’t for that Fender Stratocaster played by Bogle?

Bob Bogle died at the age of 75 this week and after fifty plus years his music will undoubtedly continue to be Rock “n” Roll classics. “Walk Don’t Run”, “Perfidia”, “Slaughter on Tenth Ave”, “Diamond Head”, “Telstar”, and of course “Hawaii Five-O”.

“That song (Walk Don’t Run) started a whole new movement in Rock ‘n’ Roll. The sound of it became ‘surf music’ and the audacity of it empowered guitarists everywhere,” said Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogerty, as he inducted the Ventures into the rock hall of fame last year. “Every guitar player on this planet knows what I’m talking about.”

The Ventures gave me much pleasure in life. One must recall that Bob played lead in the early hists like Walk, Don’t Run and Perfidia. Later I loved his bass solo in Caravan on THE VENTURES ON STAGE. The same solo in THE VENTURES LIVE IN JAPAN IN ’65 was not as good. His work was a blessing and I will remember him fondly. Justice prevailed when they got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Too bad that happened after Mel Taylor (the drummer) died.

    Chris,
Thanks for that great post. I wasn’t sure weather to post this or not. I loved the Ventures too. Many found memories. It is to bad Mel Taylor died before the induction into the Hall of Fame. I believe his son played drums with the band at the induction ceremony.

Neil Young said on a documentary this type of music inspired and motivated him to start a band. Without these guys, we might never have heard Mr. Soul, Ohio, The Needle and the Damage Done, Heart of Gold, or Hey, Hey, My, My!

Or Alabama, another great song, I saw Neil perform with Crazy Horse in the old days. One of the first albums I bought was CSN&Y Deja vu. I think I wore the grooves out on the vinyl.
