If it’s Spring in NY it’s Street Fairs

Now that spring has “just” arrived so has the bane of many New Yorkers existence, the generic “Street Fair”. They’re the same wherever they set up in the city and do nothing for the neighborhood or the businesses.

In fact all they do is create a trash and traffic mess. Selling cheap food and goods with no connection to the community. Am I alone on this? How do you feel about NY Street Fairs?

This is what I arrived to in front of Leffot this morning……

Although I’m generally in favor of closing down streets on weekends for pedestrian-only areas, I agree that the NYC street fairs are woefully lacking in adding anything to the neighborhoods they invade. This weekend it seemed like the one that was on Greenwich Ave. on Saturday just moved around the corner (literally) to Christopher St. on Sunday.

Good point, I didn’t even mention the fact that there were 2 street fairs here this weekend. They are all the same.

Brian Lehrer of WNYC wrote an Op Ed piece in the NY Times a couple years back on this very topic. I encourage people to read it online. He put some historical context around these “fairs” and pointed out how things could be improved.

    Scott,
A great article by Mr. Lehrer, I added a link to it on your comment, a must read piece.

I agree Steven, its the same thing over and over every year and it has become a nuisance for the locals… I guess it caters more to tourists.
